Kenmore Model 625-348491 Water Softener
Josie bought a new house on Eldorado St. in Madison and immediately had a dripping connection on the back of the water softener. I examined it, broke it down some, and saw that the fittings for input and output had only one O ring instead of two. The previous owner had left two new O rings, but had abandoned the installation after breaking one tab on the clip that holds the pieces in. I had two clips from a cannabalized unit, which I put in, after the other clip also snapped when I removed it. Unfortunately there were slight differences in the tab that holds the pieces in and when I turned on the pressure, the fitting separated. I tried zip ties but the pressure stretched them slightly and it wasn't a sound setup.
Ultimately, after finding similar but not exact parts online, I advised Josie to have the repairman fix it after all, because it is obviously very critical that the exact clips be used. It is a good idea also because he will assess the machine and make sure it is in proper working order. I muchly do not like the use of these kind of fittings opting instead for a threaded fitting. I worry about plastic failing and the unit separating and flooding the basement.
0 for 1 on this one, but I think it was the best decision.
Dave and Josie had a guy over who essentially just told them to get the right clips. Dave got some which were allegedly for this machine, but they didn't look exactly the same. He has ordered some more, so this fix is still pending.
