BWW -- Project #3

 BWW -- Project #3

Embarked upon a quest to get the furnace running.  The thermostat is a Honeywell and I found it on their website except the one they show is wireless and I don't think ours is.  Same face though and buttons, so I downloaded and printed the instructions.  There is also a humidistat

I am uncertain as to the instructions for this but tried both extremes as there is no off setting.  It doesn't seem to make any difference.  When the thermostat calls for heat I get a click and the fan comes on but no heat arrives.

Down at the furnace, I checked for gas availability.  The gas meter is in a cubby in one of the walls and is turned on.  The hot water heater is functioning and the pilot light is lit.  The fireplace pilot light is lit.  The fan comes on the furnace when heat is called for, but the plenum does not warm up and there is no indication of a gas valve clicking open and no sound of a flame.  After a bit, the fan goes off and a smaller, clearing fan goes on for a time.

Having exhausted my expertise, we called the furnace man and set it up for Friday.

  1. Furnace guy came today and spent a little over 2 hours working on it. He said that a pressure sensor deployed and that was why the furnace wouldn't ignite. The problem was in figuring out why. He took the fan out and inspected the heat exchanger and said it was new. He unhooked the intake air PVC pipe and it didn't appear to be blocked. There was some crud in the drain port just before it goes out the hose to the floor drain. He got that out. At the end, he had the furnace cycling properly but still didn't know why the pressure sensor had deployed. We left it at that and he said he would consult others. Fingers crossed that it keeps running. When we left, it was cycling and keeping the heat level in the house at the thermostat setting.

  2. Went over about noon and checked. Was elated to feel the warmth when I opened the front door. The temp was at 70, right where the setting was! So far so good.

  3. Visited again and the furnace is working perfectly, holding the house at 70-degrees. I think that this project can be considered done unless there are further problems.

  4. By November 30th, when we shut down the house, the furnace had run correctly with no exception, which made me very happy. We had several nights in the teens and the house remained at the setting which we placed it. I think this project was successful pending proper functioning when we return in the spring and will probably kick the furnace on for a short while.
