BWW -- Project #6

 BWW -- Project #6

The garage has two doors. They both need new knobs, especially this one which opens onto the front porch.  Not only is it weathered but one needs only a coin or flat blade screwdriver to open it, there is no depth for a key.  Since our stuff will be in there, that needs to change.  The new knob went in well except that the wood is all rotted where the sheath covers the throw.  That will have to be a future repair.

The new knob looks great and locks with a key, but as is often the case, the real problem is lining up the throw with the receiver, which always seems to require some chiseling and alignment.  I got it this far and knocked out enough with a screwdriver to receive the throw, so the door locks, but I need to bring a chisel and do a finish job on the receiving flange. There will be some wood filling to do later when we address the same issue on the door.

  1. Still need to finish this install. When it is warmer. Another problem, though. The keys for front and back door are supposed to be the same and I keyed the house front door to match. However, I tried the keys for the back garage door in the house lock and they don't work! Gotta get to the bottom of this now.

  2. Finished this garage door lock job today. The locks, contrary to being numbered the same, were not the same and I had to take the back one to the locksmith and have it keyed identical to the other garage door and front door. Shimmed out the strike plates on both and got everything aligned so now both close properly and lock properly. Job finally done.
